Japan Labels Some Goods
USA-Made
The newest trick in
Japanese competition with the United States for Latin American markets
involves labeling Japanese goods "Made in USA" and shipping them to
several countries in violation of quotas limiting Japanese imports to
the value of the country's exports to Japan. In Colombia, Japanese
machinery with false USA trademarks has been sold by a German agent.
The Japanese goods flooding the Latin market the
past few years have been generally cheap and shoddy, which, with low
labor costs, makes possible the underselling of American goods, and at
the same time makes American manufacturers appear to be exporting
inferior products to those nations.
